A sauce that belongs on everything.
I've tried just about every BBQ sauce out there. Sweet ones, spicy ones. Memphis-style, Kansas City, Carolina — you name it, it's been on my table. Every one of them had something going for it, but not a single one worked for every occasion. A great rib sauce that fell flat on chicken. A tangy glaze that overpowered a burger. I could never find the one.
So I made my own.
It wasn't meant to be a business — just a sauce I wanted to exist. But something funny happened: everyone who tried it wanted more. Friends, family, neighbors — they kept coming back. I found myself constantly running out, mixing batch after batch just to keep up.
Then one afternoon, I was smoking a rack of ribs and realized I'd run through my last bottle. I headed to the store to grab a substitute, and out of curiosity, flipped over the most popular brand on the shelf. The number one ingredient? High fructose corn syrup.
I started checking the others. Brand after brand — same story. The sauces millions of people were pouring on their food were built on cheap sweeteners and ingredients most of us can't even pronounce.
That didn't sit right with me. So I went back into the kitchen and reinvented my recipe from the ground up. Real cane sugar instead of corn syrup. All-natural ingredients you can actually read. I even went so far as to swap the tap water for spring water — because if you're going to do something, you might as well do it right.
The result was an even bigger hit than the original. That's when my daughters looked at me and said, 'Dad, you need to share this with the world.'
So now I had a mission — but a sauce that goes with everything still needed a name. Then I remembered a joke that had stuck with me since I was a kid:
"What did the Dalai Lama say to the hot dog vendor?"
"Make me one with everything."
A sauce that's truly one with everything. ZEN BBQ Sauce had found its name — and its purpose.
